WEATHER

Last week was dominated by North to Northeast winds. It was overcast throughout the period with snow and snow flurries on most days.  Snow events were few this winter so Pond and Wetland levels are low but still are not showing many mudflats.

WATERFOWL

A lone Emperor Goose was found at Southwest Point on May 1 and again on May 8. Two (2) Greater White- fronted Geese were first seen on Webster Lake on May 4 and persisted until May 8 and (5) more were flushed near Tonki on May 7.  Ducks were found in high numbers mid-week with a high count of (7) Eurasian Wigeon on May 4, (10) Mallard on May 7, (2) Northern Shoveler on Webster Lake throughout the week, (8) Greater Scaup on May 4, (2) Steller’s Eider off of Zapadni cliff on May 8, (40) Bufflehead and (34) Common Goldeneye on May 4, (1) Barrow’s Goldeneye on May 8, and (600) King Eider off of Gorbatch Beach on the 5 and 6.

SEABIRDS and GULLS

Glaucous Gulls and Glaucous-winged Gulls were found in large numbers throughout the island.  One (1) Slaty-backed Gull was seen on Big Lake during the middle of the week and a single Vega Herring Gull was found on the ice around Webster Lake on May 2. Three (3) Pigeon Guillemots were found close to Reef Cliff on May 7 and 8. The first Red-necked Grebe was seen in the harbor on May 8.

SHOREBIRDS

On May 8 a Greater Yellowlegs was flushed from Antone Slough and the first Wandering Tattler was seen on the rocks at Southwest Point.  Pacific Golden-Plovers were seen on May 6 (7) and May 8 (4).  Three (3) Bar-tailed Godwits were first seen at Northeast Point on May 2 and remained in the Salt Lagoon until May 7.

LANDBIRDS and PASSERINES

An adult Bald Eagle was seen off and on throughout the week.  Three (3) McKay’s Bunting were found at Northeast on May 8.

This is D. Sean Hegarty and Forrest D. Rowland, 2011 St. Paul Island Guides, wishing you productive, exciting birding wherever you may be. Until next week!!!  St. Paul Island Tours www.alaskabirding.com - (877) 424 - 5637
